Built in 1929, The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport or the Dum Dum airport as it was known previouslyis the largest airport in eastern India. Situated roughly 18kms away from the center of the city, it is also the fifth busiest airport in the country where passenger traffic is concerned.

There are a number of domestic and international airlines that operate from the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. JetLite, Jet Airways and Jet Konnect are the most regular ones. Some of the frequently travelled destinations from the city include Kolkata to Mumbai and Kolkata to Guwahati with a total of 90 and 60 weekly flights respectively.

Developments

With an increase in footfall and overpopulation of people in both the domestic and international terminals, there was an expansion and modernization plan proposed for the Kolkata airport for better functioning. In 2005, the runways, exit taxi ways and parking bays were expanded and developed. This strengthened the visibility for flights below 50 meters. Along with these developments, more ticket counters, cafes and check-in kiosks were added to the domestic terminal in 2009.

Prepaid taxi services and air-conditioned buses are the main connectivity facilities provided by the Kolkata airport. An addition to the developments in the airport, a flyover was built at Nagerbazar to speed up the traffic caused by the airport. The airport has two levels of underground parking with an accommodation for 3000 cars and an outdoor car park with the capacity to shelter 2000 cars.
